How does a BESS generate revenue through FCAS participation?

Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) is one of the most lucrative revenue streams for commercial battery storage. When the power grid experiences a sudden fluctuation in frequency, the BESS can inject or absorb energy within milliseconds to maintain stability.

By registering as a Market Ancillary Service Provider (MASP), businesses receive payments for simply being “on standby” to provide these rapid responses, effectively turning a backup power asset into a consistent revenue generator.

Demand Response allows businesses to reduce or shift their electricity usage during peak periods when prices are highest. A BESS automates this process by discharging stored energy during “peak events,” preventing the need to draw expensive power from the grid.
