If you installed a battery before May 1st 2026, you received roughly 24% more rebate than someone installing today. Here’s what changed. We will discuss solar rebates, battery incentives, how to qualify, what’s new for 2026, and how to choose the best solar battery in Victoria.

Federal Battery Rebate Australia 2026

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is not a new scheme, but a continuation of the incentives launched in 2025. It provides an upfront discount of approximately 30% on eligible home battery installations.

What is NOT Changing

To simplify the 2026 landscape, the following government settings remain in place:

    • The program continues to deliver discounts via the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

    • The program continues to support battery systems between 5-100 kWh (but the discount only applies to the first 50 KWh of usable capacity)

    • Batteries can be connected to new or existing solar PV systems.

    • Consumers generally do not apply directly to the Government or Clean Energy Regulator (CER); the discount is applied by the installer.

    • The discount is provided through STCs, which relates to the emissions reduction expected by your battery. So the larger the battery, the more STCs it’s eligible for.

Program Mechanics That Matter in 2026

How the amended Federal Rebate Works

The proposed amendments: from May 2026, the STC factor has dropped to 6.8 per kWh, a faster rate than before, and is also weighted by system size. For example, a 14 kWh system may receive more support per kWh than a larger 50 kWh system.

Battery STC Factor Schedule (Existing vs. Proposed). Based on the date of installation.

Year Period Existing STC Factor Proposed STC Factor
2026 Jan-Apr 8.4 8.4
2026 May-Dec 8.4 6.8
2027 Jan-Jun 7.4 5.7
2027 Jul-Dec 7.4 5.2
2028 Jan-Jun 6.5 4.6

The relevant STC Factor in the table above will reduce according to the amount of usable battery capacity installed:

    • From 0 kWh up to 14 kWh (inclusive): STC Factor applied at 100%.

    • Every kWh greater than 14 and up to 28 kWh (inclusive): STC Factor applied at 60%.

    • Every kWh greater than 28 and up to 50 kWh (inclusive): STC Factor applied at 15%.

For example, here are some common battery system sizes we regularly install for our customers and the approximate STC rebates eligible if installed before and after May 1st 2026.

  Approx. Battery STC rebate value
  Installed Jan-April 2026 Installed May-Dec 2026 Approx. STC loss
16 kWh $4,800 $3,700 $1,100
24 kWh $7,250 $4,900 $2,350
32 kWh $9,650 $5,700 $3,950
48 kWh $14,500 $6,300 $8,200

Key Federal Incentive Features

    • Eligible systems receive an approximate 30% discount until 2030, as costs continue to decrease.

    • STCs support both solar and battery installations when combined, making integrated systems more cost-effective.

Solar Rebates Victoria 2026 (State Program)

While battery rebates are now managed federally, solar panel incentives in Victoria remain available.

Solar Homes Program Benefits

    • Households that meet certain requirements can get up to $1,400 back on new solar panel (PV) systems. Through Solar Victoria, homeowners can get a rebate of up to $1,400 on solar panels.

    • Eligible Victorians also have the  option of getting a $1400 interest-free loan too.

Who Qualifies?

    • Applicants must be owner-occupiers or reside in eligible rental or community housing.

    • Income and property value limits apply.

    • Solar Victoria Rebates cannot be claimed more than once at the same address within a ten-year period.

Solar Victoria no longer provides state-level solar battery rebates or loans. Battery support is now available only through the federal scheme.

Understanding STCs for Solar Rebates Victoria 2026

Core Facts About STC Calculations

    • Small-scale Technology Certificates 2026 (STCs) are the primary mechanism for federal support of solar and battery systems under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).

    • This initiative shall continue to support battery systems up to 100kWh (subject to eligibility rules)

    • You don’t have to apply directly to the Government or the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) to receive the discount.

    • For batteries, STC entitlement is determined by usable capacity, up to 50 kWh, and the number of certificates per kWh changes over time.

STCs make solar panels and batteries cheaper, but as clean energy technology continues to get cheaper, these prices keep going down.

Solar Battery Rebate Victoria 2026: Choosing the Right System

When looking at solar battery options in Victoria for 2026, think about these things:

Key Selection Criteria

Criteria What to Look For in 2026
Capacity & Rebate While batteries up to 14 kWh  have the maximised 100% STC factor, discuss with a company you trust what battery capacity is best suited to your needs.
VPP Readiness Ensure VPP compatibility to future-proof your home for grid-sharing earnings (optional but high value).
Approved Gear Products must be on the CEC Approved List and installed by an SAA-accredited electrician.
Victoria Specials Check for Solar Victoria rebates and interest-free loans
Quality Check Prioritise a 10-year warranty and high cycle life to ensure long-term return on investment.

VPP participation is optional, and the individual financial benefit is modest. A well-sized battery delivers more value through self-consumption than VPP credits alone. Not only does it provide flexibility for you, but it can also be a source of future earnings or grid services, thereby increasing long-term value.

Why choose a VPP-ready system?

Selecting a VPP-ready system is a “win-win” for 2026. Most VPP programs in Victoria currently pay 2–5c/kWh for grid exports. It meets federal eligibility requirements while giving you the flexibility to join a Virtual Power Plant later. This transforms your battery from a simple storage unit into an active income-generator that helps stabilise the Victorian grid.

Practical Tips to Maximise Solar Rebates

    • Request quotes early. Earlier installations often get higher rebates because STC rates adjust mid-year.

    • Combine solar and battery installations to maximise financial returns and STC benefits.

    • Review eligibility requirements, as not all batteries qualify. Check accreditation and installation rules carefully.

    • Compare available options, as prices vary significantly from basic 10 kWh packs to larger systems. Consider multiple quotes before making a decision.

Key Dates to Remember

Now – 30 April 2026 Current calculation settings and higher STC factors apply.
1 May 2026 (Proposed) New, faster step-down STC factors and size-based tapering begin.
2027 Onwards (Proposed) STC factors will step down every January and July until 2030.
