RESIDENTIAL SOLAR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answers To The Most Common Residential Solar Questions

Do I still get a Victorian solar rebate in 2025 and how much is it?

Yes. Eligible owner-occupiers and rentals can access a Solar Victoria PV rebate of up to $1,400, plus an optional interest-free loan of up to $1,400 repaid over 4 years. Rebates are applied via approved retailers through the Solar Victoria portal.

Solar Victoria’s battery loan program has closed to new applications, but a new national Cheaper Home Batteries Program began from 1 July 2025 that provides an upfront discount of about 30 percent on eligible small-scale batteries, administered by the Clean Energy Regulator.

There is no regulated minimum any more. From 1 July 2025 retailers set their own FiT, which can be very low. Compare plans and expect payback to rely mainly on self-consumption rather than exports.

Yes. Powercor generally applies a standard fixed export limit of up to 5 kW per phase for residential connections, with approvals typically processed via the distributor portal. Check your specific offer and contact us, since limits can vary by location and phase.

Yes. In Victoria, inverters must be configured to AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 Australia A settings. From 23 August 2025, only models compliant with AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 Amd 2:2024 remain on the approved lists for STCs, so choosing a listed, compliant inverter is essential.

Your designer and installer must hold Solar Accreditation Australia accreditation for grid-connected PV, and also hold an unrestricted Class A electrical licence in Victoria. Using accredited people is mandatory for STCs and Solar Victoria participation.

Most standard rooftop solar panels in Belmont does not need a planning permit. Permits may be required in special cases such as properties under a Heritage Overlay, native vegetation removal, or sites affected by bushfire management overlays. Your installer should check overlays and council requirements.

From 1 October 2024, new or upgraded rooftop Belmont solar systems in Victoria must support emergency backstop requirements that allow controlled export reduction during rare system security events. Your inverter and configuration need to meet these settings.

Connection assessment for standard residential PV is commonly processed in roughly 1 to 10 business days once a complete application is lodged. Actual install timing then depends on retailer scheduling, meter works and any switchboard upgrades.

Design for high self-consumption. Right-size PV to daytime loads, consider load shifting, hot water and EV charging, and evaluate a battery primarily for bill reduction and resilience rather than export income. The new federal battery discount improves economics, but outcomes depend on your tariff and usage profile. At Winki Energy, we compare retailer FiTs and time-of-use plans.
